Suicide Prevention for Recovery Coaches

This training was developed by Choices Recovery Trainings specifically to meet the needs of Recovery Coaches.    This 6-hour training will be facilitated by Deb Rhoades and a co-host/co-facilitator live or virtually via Zoom. For Zoom trainings, participants must have access to both audio and video connection and must fully participate.


This Rhoades to Recovery Training is approved through 4/2024 by ASAP-NYCB for CRPA and CARC Continuing Education renewal hours.   This training is also approved for 6 NYS OASAS CASAC, CPP and CPS re-credentialing hours.


2024 Training Schedule

This training will provide Peer Recovery Professionals with an understanding of suicide as well as suicides' relationship to addiction and mental illness. Coaches will develop an understanding of the risk factors and warning signs and learn how to utilize their coaching skills to screen for and prevent suicide. Coaches will additionally learn about postvention strategies for taking care of themselves after working with someone who has suicidal thoughts/ideation, attempts or who dies by suicide.


Participants will:

  • Recognize that Suicide Prevention is everyone's responsibility
  • Demonstrate appropriate non-stigmatizing language when talking about suicide
  • Recognize that Suicide is a Public Health issue
  • Explain that Suicide does not happen to only those with mental illness
  • Define Suicide, including ideation, plan and attempt as well as other potential characteristics of suicide
  • Identify risk factors, warning signs and protective factors of suicide prevention
  • Be able to asses a crisis from a non-crisis situation
  • Perform role appropriate services including executing crisis protocol strategies
